NYS CERTIFICATIONS MANDATED: NYS Certified TESOL K-12, Bilingual Extension (SPANISH)
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must hold a Master’s Degree in Education or TESOL and New York State certification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) with a Bilingual Extension in Spanish.
Ideal Candidates must have completed three years or more of approved and appropriate teaching of Bilingual, Dual Language, and/or English Language Learners’ programs.
EXPERIENCE:
In evaluating each candidate’s qualifications, consideration will be given to the candidate’s coursework and experiences in the areas of scientifically based research, assessment, and professional development in the area of second language acquisition, cultural and linguistically responsive teaching, early literacy skills for grades K – 12 and Commissioner Regulations (C.R. Part 154).
DUTIES:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Guiding and assisting English Language Learners (ELLs), in the use of their native language strategies of the Four Hallmarks of Literacy - listening, speaking, reading, and writing in all content areas in order to improve academic attainment of English Language Acquisition.
- Collaborating with classroom co teachers, and school building administrators regarding the implementation of research based instructional strategies that are direct, explicit, systematic, and designed to meet the unique needs of English language learners.
- Monitoring of strategies and materials to ensure they are appropriate and comprehensible for English language learners.
- Prospective Candidate must have knowledge of ELL Identification Process, administration of NYSISTELL and NYSESLAT, Integrated Co-teaching Models, Dual Language models, and the NYSED OBEWL Blueprint for ELLs.
- Planning and Providing Professional Development for teachers and supporting teachers in the development and implementation of action plans based on student data.
- Modeling ENL strategies to Bilingual ELLs using their L1 as evidenced in instructional delivery.
- Attending district Professional Development for Bilingual/ENL teachers
- Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
- Plan, conduct and coordinate parent in-service workshops.
- Communicates with parents and pertinent school personnel on student progress.
- Develop and revise District ELA/ENL curriculum for ELLs according to NEXT GEN Standards as needed.
- Evaluates academic and social growth of students.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide a productive and safe classroom environment.
APPOINTMENT:
Appointment will be made by the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the School Principal and Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources following assessment of training, experience, certifications, credentials and evaluation of service. Personal interviews, a modeled lesson and a writing sample shall be scheduled.
